An Amazing Race in Oak Park

Nearly 2,000 participants turn out for the 34th Annual Frank Lloyd Wright Races.

First-place runner David Carter, "exhausted" but beaming, crossed the finish line of the 5-kilometer portion of the Frank Lloyd Wright Races in just under 17 minutes.

Although it was his first time running the annual Oak Park event, Carter, 23, is no stranger to racing on foot. The Valparaiso University alum spent four years on the school's cross country team.

"Yesterday was my birthday," he said, adding that his first-place finish was a great way to celebrate.

More leaves than raindrops fell Sunday on the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District, as thousands assembled outside Oak Park-River Forest High School for a series of races named after the revered architect.

Ten minutes after Carter's finish, River Forest resident Frank Baker crossed the finish line in a gray suit and tie, disrupting the sea of T-shirts and Spandex flooding past the white banner marking the end of the race.

With a white bandage perched above his left eyebrow, Baker was running as "Mayhem," the well-dressed but accident-prone figurehead from Allstate's popular new ad campaign. Baker wanted to take the costume for a test run before Halloween.

"I'm very happy with it," Baker said of his race time of 28 minutes 5 seconds. "But it was a little too hot in this outfit."

Temperatures hovered around 60 degrees throughout the morning, continuing a weeks-long streak of unseasonable warmth.

In the middle of Scoville Avenue, a trio of Oak Park girls jumped with excitement for the final event – the Youth Mile. Other highlights of the course included eight houses that Wright designed during his 20 years of practice in Oak Park.
