Movie Fundraiser to Benefit Cancer Victim's Family
Saturday screening of "How to Train Your Dragon" will benefit the family of Bill Figatner, who recently lost a bout with cancer.
A special movie screening at the Lake Theatre in Oak Park on Saturday morning gives fresh meaning to the phrase “family film.”
All proceeds from the showing of How to Train Your Dragon (2010) will benefit the family of Bill Figatner, who died of cancer in December. The Oak Park Women’s Guild is sponsoring the movie fundraiser, now in its third year running.
“I hope to make this a bigger event than it has been,” said Kari Harris, Guild member and co-chair of the organizing committee. In past years the event has drawn between 3,000 and 4,000 people, Harris said.
Bill Figatner, a husband and father of two, grew up in Oak Park and later moved to River Forest. He and his wife, Sandie, operated the family-owned businesses Figatner Scott Co. Paint and Decorating Center and Old Fashioned Candies on West Cermak Road in Berwyn.
Bill, who volunteered at his children’s school in River Forest, was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer last March. He died in his home on December 29. Proceeds from Saturday’s event will help his family pay off medical bills.
Harris was the recipient of funds from last year’s event. She was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in April 2010. With her two kids aged one and four at the time, and her husband working 18 hours a day at his small business, Harris said her diagnosis came at an especially inopportune time.
“When you have little kids, you can’t put their lives on hold because something happened to you,” Harris said.
She and her husband used funds from the benefit to pay for childcare, as well as some medical expenses. Harris called the financial support she received from community members, both known and unknown, “awe-inspiring.”
The fundraiser was started three years ago to benefit the family of a River Forest woman who was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Harris said the Guild selects families for the event that have parents who have been active in their communities, face a “life-altering” experience and have young children.
The Lake Theater is donating the theater space and tickets, while the Guild will cover the cost of the film and projectionist.
Donations can be made via PayPal on the Oak Park Women’s Guild’s event web site.
The showing is at the Lake Theatre, 1022 Lake St. at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5, with 100 percent of proceeds headed to the Figatner family. There will be a raffle with 18 baskets, which include board games, DVDs, candy, activity books and popcorn.
