119 Bikes, Prada Purse and iPhones Among Village's Auction Items

Quite often in my time covering city council and village boards I've come across the agenda item, "Authorizing the Distribution and Disposal of Surplus Property."

I didn't usually pay much attention to it in Wheaton, where surplus property meant banged-up cell phones and old electronics (for the most part). 

But the list is a bit more interesting in Oak Park. Could this be a killer new way to shop local? 

Oak Park sells its surplus property on PropertyRoom.com and receives 80 percent of the proceeds, according to a village staff memo.

In addition to 119 bikes and 10 scooters, other items on the list up for approval at the Sept. 16 Village Board meeting includes a Louis Vuitton wallet and a red Prada purse (score), a men's wedding ring, a handful of tools (drills, screwdrivers), a 3.5-foot sword and a couple of iPhones.

You can also find a hearing aid, a jacket with some fur detail and an air mattress on the list.
