Concordia University Chicago - Kapelle Announces Spring Performances

Concordia University Chicago’s Kapelle, the University’s premier vocal ensemble, will be touring, performing, and collaborating with area ensembles in a series of upcoming concerts.

Rediscovered Treasures IV: Music of 18th-century Spain and Mexico
Friday, February 28, 8 p.m. - First United Church of Oak Park
Saturday, March 1, 8 p.m. - St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Chicago.

The Kapelle will join forces with Chicago Arts Orchestra (CAO) in a continued series of breathing life into recently unearthed 18th century Latin American music, featuring Spanish colonial works of Antonio Juanas and Antonio Rodriguez de Hita among other composers. A pre-concert lecture by CAO’s resident scholar, Dr. Drew Davies, will take place before each concert. • Spring Tour Home Concert
Saturday, March 15, 7:30 p.m. – Concordia-Chicago Chapel of Our Lord
The Kapelle will conclude their spring tour to Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee in a concert that sings of the light of Christ in a program entitled "Lux Aeterna."  Under the direction of Charles P. Brown, the repertoire spans the globe from Russia to Latin America, featuring the music of Alexander Kopylov, Alexander Kastalsky, and Alexander Nikolsky in settings of the text Gladsome Light, selections from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem, a rediscovered Mass by Spanish composer Antonio Rodríguez de Hita, classic 20th century choral standards by Norwegian Composer Egil Hovland and American composer Edwin Fissinger, new works by American composer Howard Helvey and British composer Hywel Davies, and spirituals and gospel music by Harry T. Burleigh Keith Hampton, and Moses Hogan.
As part of Concordia's 150th Anniversary celebration, the program will also feature the music of Concordia-Chicago composers: Thomas Gieschen, Richard Hillert, Jonathan Kohrs, Walter Pelz, and Carl Schalk.

This free event is open to the public. The Concordia University Chicago campus is located at 7400 Augusta Street, River Forest, IL. Free handicapped-accessible parking is available in the visitors’ lot north of the University parking structure on Bonnie Brae Street.

• Chicago Symphony Center
Monday, April 28, 7:30 p.m.
The Kapelle will return to Chicago’s Symphony Center with the Symphony and Chorus of Oak Park & River Forest Symphony, Heritage Chorale, and the Concert Choirs of Chicago State University in a performance of “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis and Dona nobis pacem” by Vaughan Williams, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem.
