Dominican University is pleased to announce the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. The program, which is fully approved by the State Board of Nursing in Illinois as well as the Illinois Board of Higher Education, is accepting applications for enrollment for the fall 2014 semester.
“It is very gratifying to see the efforts of many people and months of academic preparation come to fruition,” said Debra Gurney, executive director of the nursing program. “Our dedicated faculty and administrators have designed a world-class nursing curriculum which will allow students to take all coursework at Dominican, with clinical experiences at several partnering healthcare institutions. This four-year degree will give students the edge they need to find productive jobs in the nursing field.”
A new state-of-the art simulation lab, located in Parmer Hall, will allow students to practice all of their skills prior to going into the clinical settings. The nursing program is an outgrowth of Dominican’s strong reputation in the sciences, including biology, chemistry, neuroscience and nutrition, all of which are also housed in Parmer Hall. Total enrollment in science courses has increased more than 200 percent in the past six years.

Nursing continues to be one of the most in-demand and fastest growing education programs and careers in the Chicago area. Nurses are expected to play an increasingly important role in healthcare delivery, and the standards for nurses entering the field reflect the need for rigorous, interdisciplinary training in medical science as well as interpersonal and administrative skills.
“Dominican’s BSN is a particularly mission-driven initiative, educating competent as well as compassionate health care professionals with a strong moral compass,” said President Donna M. Carroll. “In addition, as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Dominican will be able to meet the increasing need for bilingual healthcare professionals.”

In addition, Dominican offers a post-baccalaureate pre-medical degree designed to prepare students with bachelor’s degrees for admission to medical school and advanced health sciences degree programs. Dominican graduates of the pre-medical program have traditionally achieved an impressive 90 percent acceptance rate to nationwide medical schools.
