Creativity + Workouts = Fun

Start thinking outside of the box and get creative with your workouts. The result may be a more enjoyable and effective workout!

As a personal trainer, when I first meet with a client I try to get an idea of what types of workouts they consider “fun.” It’s a serious question. I want to know how to maximize their workouts by making sure they enjoy them. In response, I usually get an “are you kidding?” sort of look.

When thinking about exercise, most people would not use the word “fun.”  I’ve heard a variety of descriptions, including: it’s boring, it’s hard, it’s such a chore… you get the idea, but never “fun.”

Yes, exercising is hard and can be painful (in a good way), but it can also be fun! In my opinion, the key to enjoying your workout is creativity!

Many people get in the trap of doing the exact same workout over and over and over. Not only can this get old very quickly, but also your workout isn’t as effective if you don’t switch it up. Others tend to stick to a solid block of time on the cardio machine of their choice, which can become extremely monotonous.

It’s probably easy to just do your standard routine. Just get it done with. No thinking required. But, by thinking outside of the box, and making a few simple changes, you might actually start to enjoy working out.

Here are some ways to think outside the box for your next workout:

  • Switch up your environment.  Just being creative with where you chose to workout can make a world of difference. For example, taking your workout from the indoors to the outdoors can create a whole new energy. If you’re a treadmill person, take that run or walk outside! Check out the track at OPRF and challenge yourself with sprints, or take a stroll through an area of Oak Park that you might not have explored yet.

  • Think like a kid. Kids can make a game, or toy, out of anything. They aren’t worried about looking silly. Head for your nearest park and make it your own personal gym! Use the benches for step-ups, sprint from tree to tree, use the bleachers for dips. Do some pull-ups on a sturdy tree branch. Just use your imagination!

  • Take advantage of Internet deals. With sites like Groupon, there are countless exercise promotions available. Sometimes you will come across classes you didn’t know existed, i.e. piloxing (pilates and boxing), trampolining (how can that not be fun?).

  • Join a team. It seems there are adult leagues for all kinds of sports these days. Basketball, swim, soccer, kickball, volleyball…the list is endless. Tap into your inner child and think about what might be a fun way to get moving. Added bonus, you might meet some cool people along the way!

  • Hire a personal trainer.  As a trainer, my job is to plan fun, effective workouts for my clients. I have the background and knowledge to create individualized workouts that my clients will enjoy! All they have to do is show up.
