Get Your Wellness On This Weekend

Health and Wellness Expo brings local health and wellness experts together to promote and educate people on the topics of health, wellness, fitness and nutrition.

It’s no secret that as a society we are dealing with a number of health and wellness issues related to obesity and unhealthy habits. Many communities do little to promote healthy living, however others have embraced the idea of becoming a healthier community.

As a resident of Oak Park, I often find myself in awe of what a health conscious community we are. I see things in our area that I don’t often see in other suburban areas. Just taking a stroll through the streets of Oak Park you see a number of people out for a run or walk. On weekends there are families riding bikes together, or playing in local parks. We also have a bustling farmer’s market, green initiatives and a downtown area that is filled with businesses that promote healthy living. In my opinion, we are a community that realizes the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

So it is no surprise that this weekend many of these local businesses are coming together to inform and educate the community on the subjects of health, wellness, fitness and nutrition. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 13th, Percy Julian Middle School will be hosting the ‘Know Before You Go Health and Wellness Expo.’

From 1pm-5pm you can take advantage of the expertise of a number of local health and wellness experts. There will be fitness and cooking demonstrations, health screenings, and chair massages (who doesn’t love a chair massage?!). Not to mention loads of information on a number of other health and wellness issues.

This expo is beneficial to everyone in the community, from those avidly living a healthy lifestyle to those that are curious about incorporating healthier habits into their everyday lives.

The ancient poet Virgil said, “The greatest wealth is health.” I for one agree 100%. Our health is a priority, and if we can be smart and proactive about maintaining it to the best of our ability, then we are all the better for it. But, to be realistic, it is often neglected due to the hussle and bussle of everyday lives.

Many people let the toll of stress weigh down their mental and physical health. As a society many of us lack sleep, exercise, proper nutrition and even the joy of living. Because of this, I get so excited when I see communities promote healthy lifestyles. Oak Park serves as a shining example of what a healthy, happy community can look like. Granted, not everyone has followed this path toward good health and wellness, but the more we can inform and educate people the better!

So, this Saturday, if you have the urge to sit in front of the TV and watch a reality TV marathon, or are trying to find an activity that’s good for the whole family, check out the expo! I hope to see you all swing by my table and say a quick ‘hello.’
