Forums To Center On Two Quality of Life Issues

Strengthening diversity, improving Stevenson Park focus of different sessions Wednesday.

Diversity and parks - issues that engage Oak Park residents - will be the focus of two different public meetings both at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“Ensuring a Diverse, Integrated and Inclusive Future in Oak Park” will center on the 2010 Census and what it could hold for the community. That event will be at , 824 N. Hayes St.

The event is sponsored by the and the village’s Housing Programs Advisory Committee.

The principal presenter will be Rob Breymaier, the center’s executive director, who will explain what is being done in the village to continue sustaining . He also will talk about what the community still needs to do toward that effort.

He also will present a snapshot of the census by race and ethnicity in areas of a four to eight-block radius.   It is the most specific census data that the village has to date, Breymaier said.

“We will also look at what we could do going forward from a policy and program perspective,” he said. “This is the beginning of a longer term discussion on community diversity.”

A five-member panel will also take part including: Morgan Davis, associate board member of the housing center; Steve Glass, HPAC chairman; Alejandra Ibanez, Program Officer of the; Oak Park Trustee Colette Lueck and  Karen Su, co-founder, Families and Friends of Asian-American Students.

During the second, a draft recommendation for improvements at will be unveiled and discussed at the Center, 49 Lake St. will be collected during the this the third meeting addressing for the park. The 3.3 acre recreation area, in far eastern Oak Park, is the last facility in the system to get a master plan

Draft recommendations will be debated during a meeting of the park board's committee of the whole at 7 p.m., July 7 at the Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St.

Stevenson features an all-purpose sports field, a field for baseball and softball and playground equipment for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12 years. Three half-court basketball courts, a skateboard park and a teen center also are housed there.
