Oak Park Conservatory hosts monthly wine event through summer

Uncorked occurs on fourth Friday of each month; offers food, drinks and activities.

There are more than plants at the Oak Park Conservatory. This summer, the conservatory—a Park District of Oak Park property—is playing host to a monthly wine event.

Uncorked is presented by the Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory (FOPCON), a nonprofit organization with a goal of building interest in the conservatory, offer educational and recreational opportunities and support projects that benefit the conservatory.

Uncorked is just one of those projects. On the fourth Friday of each month, the Oak Park Conservatory (615 Garfield St., Oak Park) is abuzz with activity. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Uncorked attendees are treated to live music, local art on display, appetizers from a local eatery and various activities—not to mention, wine (craft beer will be on hand as well)! And event-goers get all of that for a modest $10 ticket price, which includes two drink tickets.

The first event was held on June 28. “The June launch of UNCORKED was a huge success.  Almost 200 people filled the Conservatory and the adjoining Rubinstein Garden for the first of the four summer series events,” says Ellen Kruner, vice president of FOPCON. “Guests enjoyed the lively jazz played by the Walter Mitty Jazz Band, viewed beautiful colored pencil and pastel paintings by Judith Shepelak while nibbling on appetizers from Whole Foods and sipping wine and craft beer from the Marion Street Cheese Market.  Many guests took tours of the Conservatory showrooms and noted the Century Plant (an Agave) which is about to bloom.  The last time it bloomed was in 1988.”

The next Uncorked event will be held at the conservatory on Friday, July 26. Music for that event will be provided by TIMTY and the jewelry from Bebeka Design will be on display. Marion Street Cheese Market (100 S. Marion St., Oak Park) will provide the wine and craft beer, and the appetizers will come from Taste of Brasil (906 S. Oak Park Ave., Oak Park).
