Oak Park Public Library will host a reception for a newly acquired mask created by artist Geraldine McCullough. Refreshments will be served. The reception is open to the public. The library was honored to receive the mask from Sheila and Phil Rock as a gift to its permanent art collection.
Longtime Oak Park resident Geraldine McCullough (1922-2008) was a world-renown sculptor with works exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington and the National Women's Museum in Washington, DC. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in painting and art education. She was presented the Oak Park Area Arts Council's Joseph Randall Shapiro Award in 2000 in recognition of "exceptional contributions to the arts."
The untitled mask is mixed media measuring 51 x 10.5 inches and is hung in a public space on the south wall of the Main Library's third floor. McCullough's work joins 24 others on permanent display at the Main Library. Oak Park Public Library's permanent art collection also includes art at the Dole Branch Library and Maze Branch Library. Rotating exhibits by local artists are on display in the Main Library Art Gallery.
