Get Out: The Bard’s the Thing

Two big summer events open this weekend. Get out and explore. Here's to good weather!

Oak Park Festival Theatre 

When/Where:  The History of Henry the Fourth. Preview performances 8 p.m., June 9 and June 10. 8 p.m. Saturday.  Sunday performance starts at 7 p.m.  The play's the thing at Austin Gardens, 167 Forest Ave., Oak Park, IL.

Why Go:  Where else in Oak Park can you see the Bard’s plays performed under the stars? Bring a blanket or a chair and watch some pretty good theatre. You won’t give the devil his due if you go.

Price: Preview performance, all seats $15; rest of the run, adults $25, students and seniors $20.

Honey Island Swamp Band

When/Where: 9 p.m., Saturday at Fitzgerald’s, 6615 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn.

Why Go: NOLA musicians, marooned in San Francisco after Hurricane Katrina, will draw on the musical roots of Taj Mahal, Dr. John, Gram Parsons and Jerry Garcia and others for what could be a rocking good time.

Price: $12 for advance tickets, $15 at the door.

Design Detectives Family Tour

When/Where: 1:30pm-2:15pm, Saturday,, 951 Chicago Ave, Oak Park, IL.

Why Go: It would be interesting to learn from Preservation Trust Junior Interpreters as they share the stories of his growing up in Oak Park and how he broke with traditional design.  

Price:  $15 for adult, $12 for youth ages 4 to 17 and free for seniors ages 65 and older and children under 3.

Beekeeping Workshop

When/Where: 10 am to noon, Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St., Oak Park.

Why Go: With Oak Park trustees tentatively slated to takeup this issue on June 20, according to Village Manager Tom Barwin, you might want to get a head start.  The workshop is hosted by the Park District of Oak Park.

Price: Pre-registration required. $10 Oak Park Residents/$15 Non-Residents

World Class Noise

When/Where: From 5:30pm to 7 pm, Sunday, June 12, Scoville Park, 800 W. Lake St., Oak Park.

Why Go:  Kick-off to the Summer Concerts at Scoville Park series. This should be a soulful way to start the week.

Price: Free.
