Grand Scintilla Wins Battle of the Bands 2012

Score one for local musicians.

Grand Scintilla, a four-piece rock band, took first place at the Park District of Oak Park's Battle of the Bands, held Saturday at . They are: Alex Bailey (drums), Isaiah Beard (lead guitar), Niko Ewert (bass), and David Fromberg (guitar, vocals).

In fact, it's the second time Grand Scintilla captured the local title. They won in 2010. This year, they'll bring their act, "combining hardcore punk with math rock," to the regional competition in Forest Park on July 21. If they win that, they'll head to the state finals, scheduled for Aug. 18 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

The statewide competition is a program of the Illinois Park & Recreation Association's Teen Committee. According to its website, each year approximately 120 teen bands participate in the event." Prizes in the past have included "everything from studio time to band makeovers."
