VIDEO: Principal's Surprise at the Hatch Schoolyard Dedication

Hatch Elementary School teacher kicks off ribbon cutting ceremony at the new schoolyard, finds out an outdoor classroom has been dedicated in her name.

A shocked and teary-eyed Sheila Carter officially unveiled the new Hatch Elementary School schoolyard Thursday with the ribbon cutting of an outdoor classroom that—to her surprise—was dedicated in her name.

Hatch students, parents and staff gathered at the school Thursday for the ceremony, which also included ribbon cuttings for a new outdoor science learning area and playground.

The schoolyard project was a community effort over the summer. Carter recognized the PTO and volunteer effort to maintain the grounds, the board for its approval of the project and the student who had the idea to build a new playground.

The District 97 board in March approved final construction plans for the playground upgrades at Irving, Hatch, Mann and Whittier elementary schools, according to a Wednesday Journal report.
