Anxious About the Election? Talk to a Therapist as the Results Arrive at the Buzz Cafe

By all accounts, it's going to be a nail biter of an election tonight as the results roll in. It probably comes as no surprise that at the polls in Oak Park this morning, voters were feeling a bit anxious about the outcome.

If you're one of them, you might want to consider talking to someone tonight—over a cup of coffee perhaps.

, 905 S. Lombard Ave. in Oak Park, will be turning on the television (a rare event) as employees and customers come together to watch the election returns. The event will offer place for people to come together to watch the election end—but also to provide some psychological comfort if the outcome doesn't go their way.

Buzz Cafe owner Laura Maychruk first decided to provide therapists to voters post-election in 2004. The cafe has been hosting an election night viewing party since 2000, but the prospect of another four years of a George W. Bush presidency had many customers were feeling especially worn out mentally.

"I was talking with customers [in 2004] and they were just distraught," Maychruk said. "They were really upset—talking about moving to Canada—and we figured we'd do something to help."

Maychruk said the event is designed to be a little tongue in cheek, but, as in 2004, she was noticing a heightened level of anxiety this time around as well.

"It's not as bad [as 2004], but people are still really nervous," Maychruk said.

So, the decision was made to bring back the professional help again this year. Two therapists from River Forest will be present to watch the returns and offer help should customers need it.

The Buzz Cafe will also be offering something special for those who prefer to head to the fridge for mental health support instead of a professional.

In addition to the cafe's regular menu of coffee drinks, sandwiches and burgers, they will also be serving up a prix fixe meal of pure Americana featuring meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes and a slice of apple pie.

"It's supposed to be fun either way," Maychruk said. "Life will go on."

The event is designed to be family friendl, Maychruk said, and customers are encouraged to bring their kids and enjoy the night in a relaxed setting.

You can even bring your own beer and wine—just in case you need to drown your sorrows in a little something stiffer than a latte.

But of course, if you're doing that, it might also be a good time to talk with a professional about that.
