Mattress Chain Could Open in Old Borders Space

Sleepy's, a New York-based mattress chain, has filed a business registration application with the Village of Oak Park for the former Borders Books space in downtown Oak Park, the Chicago Tribune reports.

A mattress chain may open this fall in the former Borders Books space at 1144 Lake St. in downtown Oak Park, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

New York-based retailer, Sleepy's, has filed an Oak Park business registration application, listing November as a projected opening date, according to the Tribune. Oak Park Business Services Manager Loretta Daly told the paper nothing has been approved yet for Sleepy's.

The space has been vacant since Borders closed in 2011.

Sleepy's announced its expansion to Chicagoland earlier this summer, with plans to open 10 area stores, according to a company news release. According to the Sleepy's website, there currently are nine locations in the Chicago area.

Sleepy's is a privately-owned, fourth-generation company with more than 900 retail locations. The Chicago expansion marked Sleepy's first foray outside of the East Coast, according to the release.

“Chicago offers an excellent mix of urban and suburban locations and a population that appreciates a high-quality, high-value shopping experience,” Sleepy’s Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Lobb said in a statement, “We look forward to offering consumers a fresh option when they shop for a new bed.”
