Ready, Get Set, Shop: Black Friday in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park

The biggest shopping day of the year starts as early as 8 p.m. Turkey Day for at least one local big-box store.

Shopping list - check; wish list - check; cash or whatever - be sure you have enough.

And it might even be a good idea to make sure you have all of that in line as some big box store plan to open its doors for the biggest shopping day of the year even before the biggest day starts.

Some of the competition for shoppers on this day will play out right here in Forest Park.

Walmart, 1300 Des Plaines Ave., in Forest Park, plans opening its doors at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving Day to accommodate all the shoppers who want to take in bargains early. The store will be open at For those who like the convenience of sitting at their computer screens, there are bargains to be had through Wednesday.The store on Black Friday will open at 5 a.m.

Not to be outdone, rival Kmart, just next door to Walmart at  7600 W. Roosevelt Rd., also will start offering its Black Friday specials at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and continue until 3 a.m. Friday. The store will open its doors for Black Friday two hours later at 5 a.m.

Another "big box", Radio Shack at 914 Madison St. will open at 6 a.m. Nov. 23, where a wide variety of electronics and other related items will be on sale. Customers will also get a $10 Radio Shack coupon for every $50 spend on Black Friday, which means more savings.

Old Navy, 417 N. Harlem Ave. and The Gap, 435 N. Harlem both in Oak Park will kick off their Black Friday festivities at midnight and will remain open until 11 p.m.

As far as other Black Friday sales, Target plans to have pretty long hours. Black Friday store hours for the Super Target in Broadview, 800 Broadview Village Square; Melrose Park, 850 North Ave., and Cicero, 2901 S. Cicero Ave., will be from 9 p.m. Thanksgiving Day and remain open until 11 p.m. Friday. 

Other area big-box shops also plan big splashy sales for the Day after Thanksgiving. Best Buy at 2538 S. Harlem Ave. in North Riverside and 1334 Winston Plaza in Melrose Park will open for business at 5 a.m. Friday.

If electronics or gadgets aren't your thing and clothing, well, is preferred, look for Black Friday bargains at JC Penney when the North Riverside store, 7507 W. Cermak Rd., opens at 6 a.m.

Rival Kohl's has it beat - the North Riverside store, at 2200 S. Harlem Ave. will be open for 24 hours starting at midnight on Black Friday. Customers can already view their deals online.

Retailer Sears, just across North Avenue at 1601 N. Harlem Ave. in Chicago, will be open from 8 p.m. until 11:59 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.
