Scratch Kitchen and Lounge is Forest Park's latest restaurant with a downtown feel to open up on the Madison Street strip.
I took it for a test drive on Thursday, and was definitely pleased with what I experienced. The menu is still small, but that's actually kind of the point. A few more options will be added down the line, but the owner and chef tell Patch they would rather be really great at a few things, then just throw as much on the menu as possible.
I'm not going to give too much away. You'll have to wait until early next week to read our profile on the owner (he's got deep roots in the area) and our review of the food.
What I will say is that they do what they do right. I can say with some certainty that this place will soon become a favorite local hangout for late night food and drinks. The mac and cheese here is fantastic, and is so far from anything you could make from a box, it's almost a crime to call them by the same name. There's also burgers and sandwiches, and a soon to be released daily specials menu.
Oh, and just about everything is made from scratch, of course.
This weekend would actually be a great time to stop by for your first visit. They've got TVs up to watch the Super Bowl, and the owner hinted at a serious seven-layer dip they'll be featuring for the big game. Plus, a Hamm's goes for a $1.50 here and they've got a huge selection of canned beer at very reasonable prices for you to wash it all down with.
It's not your standard sports bar, but hey, that can be a good thing too.
