Supporters of Val's Halla Records in Oak Park Raising Funds to Keep the Lights On

Dedicated customers of Val's Halla Records, located in the Oak Park Arts District, are raising money to keep it open.

Supporters of a local record shop in Oak Park are coming together to help keep a beloved business on its feet, after news came that the store was struggling to pay its bills.

As of 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, a total of 13 benefactors have already donated $1,010 to support Val's Halla Record store—a shop that many can't imagine Oak Park without.

The funds raised since Nov. 27 speaks to the level of support the record shop receives from the community in Oak Park. But, , is more than just a record store, supporters said.

Oak Park residents Jim and Sue Gill were so intent on keeping the store open after hearing that it might have to close, they decided to hold a benefit party at their home at 835 N. Kenilworth, on Dec. 13 from 7-10 p.m.

Not a single person, Jim Gill said, has questioned why they should donate their money to a business.

"It's more than a store, it's an institution," Gill said. "People aren't ready to let this go."

At the fundraiser, attendees can enjoy tasty treats from food blogger and chef Melissa Elsmo, drinks and a very special jazz mandolin concert by Don Stiernberg.

"I don't know how, but we'll find a way to make everyone fit in our home," Gill laughed at the prospect of holding a concert in his living room.

Tickets to the event cost $100 and can be purchased by making a reservation with Sue Gill at suegil4@earthlink.net. Those who can't make the party, but still want to support the store, can also make donations at a BlogSpot page set up for the party, here.
