Fast Facts: Proviso East has revisited its storied past behind one of its best former players, Donnie Boyce. The former NBA first-round pick and member of the Pirates’ famed Three Amigos has led Proviso East to consecutive trips to the state tournament as the head coach. This year’s version is led by Carter, who is committed to West Virginia. He scored a career-high 31 points against Hinsdale South last week and poured in 29 against Fenwick when the two teams matched up a few weeks ago in the fifth-place game at the Proviso West Tournament. Aside from Carter, the Pirates are very young, with Williams looking like their next big star. Fenwick’s impressive start to the season has been done despite significant injuries to key players. The team’s best player, Northwestern commit Scott Lindsey, has missed the entire season but resumed practice Monday. There is a chance he could play in either of Fenwick’s key games this weekend (the Friars face St. Joseph Friday). Smith has been out since injuring his ankle at a Christmas Eve practice, but he will play this weekend. Both grew up in the Proviso district and are anxious for a chance to play in the game. Dwyer and Planek have provided a veteran, steady influence down low that has helped the young backcourt survive without their star players.
