Concordia-Chicago Wind Symphony Announces Carnegie Hall and Home Concerts

Concordia University Chicago’s Wind Symphony, the University’s premier instrumental ensemble, will embark on an east coast tour capped off with a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The ten day tour will take the group to New Hampshire, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina and New York. On March 4, the group will perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Wind Band Festival.

“It is an incredible honor to be asked to play at Carnegie Hall,” said the group’s conductor Dr. Richard Fischer. “I can think of no better honor for our very talented students and for the University during its 150th Anniversary year.”

For information on special Carnegie Hall ticket prices and exclusive pre-concert receptions, contact the Concordia University Chicago Foundation at Development@CUChicago.edu or 866-448-3867.

The tour culminates on Friday, March 14, at 8 p.m. with the ensemble’s home concert held at Concordia-Chicago’s Chapel of Our Lord. This free event is open to the public and will feature works by Shostakovich, John Phillip Sousa, Julie Giroux, Donald Hunsberger, Reber Clark, Wayne Oquin, Frank Ticheli, Frank Bencriscutto and Alfred Reed.

The program also will feature soloists Jean Laurenz on trumpet and Patrick Rehker on clarinet. An alumnus of Northwestern and Yale Universities, Laurentz has performed with ensembles around the world including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Schleswig-Holstein European Festival Orchestra, the Chamber Series at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Rehker graduated from Northwestern University, has studied with Todd Waldecker and is the winner of the 2001 Beethoven Young Artist Competition. A freelance performer and teacher, he teaches clarinet at CUC and performs with the Illinois Philharmonic, Highland Park Strings, and the Oak Park-River Forest and Quad City symphonies.

The CUC Wind Symphony maintains an active performance schedule, having performed in schools, churches and concert halls in 43 states, Canada, Eastern Europe and China. The Wind Symphony is conducted by Dr. Richard R. Fischer, distinguished professor of music and the Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair in Music Performance. Fischer is a River Forest resident in his 40th year as director of bands at Concordia University Chicago.
