Letter to the Editor: A Word of Thanks from the Strokosch Family

Family lauds community's efforts, both online and in person.

From the Family of Jassen Strokosch, Oak Park

Current media these days too often, it seems to us, deliver messages of anger, hostility, and desperation. Following natural disasters, from earthquake to mine cave-in, we sometimes are treated to glimpses of another side of humanity, a side that is capable of rising above one’s own needs and comfort to reach out and care for others in need, a side that shows that humans are capable of coming together and problem-solving for the good of the community and the good of individuals.

Oak Park is not a community that has had many disasters where the true nature of its people has been tested. This week our family, which has been part of the Village since 1965, had occasion to witness the very depths of this community’s being.

When we did not know the whereabouts of our son, by Wednesday morning an army of people moved in the most caring, protective, effective, efficient and complete manner that anyone, from beggar to king, could have asked for. Close friends immediately stepped in followed right behind by the community at large. Most media sources were terrific -- supportive and sensitive. The social media network moves like lightning and we’ve received incredible encouragement from individuals and groups from as far away as Japan. We feel so blessed to know the world is filled with such caring people. And we thank you all.

But everyone needs to know that Jassen’s friends, who include a good chunk of the Irving School community, are absolutely awesome! We cannot find sufficient words to describe their care and concern for our son nor enough ways to praise and thank them for their selfless efforts. This tremendous support not only was present during Jassen’s absence, but has continued since his safe return home Friday night. We are confident we can call upon them should we need to in days ahead.

Thank you, everyone, for contributing to the best possible outcome. The days of the future are definitely brighter than they were a week ago, especially knowing how we can count on you.
