Microbrew Review Back in Oak Park

Who's thirsty?

Here, try a beer. Now try 90 more.

OK, so maybe that's not the safest idea, but patrons of Saturday's Microbrew & Food Review can certainly get their fill of craft beer selections as 36 American breweries descend on downtown Oak Park.

"People are more into eating local, eating fresh and eating for quality," said Pete Crowley, head brewer at Chicago's Haymarket Pub and Brewery and president of the Illinois Craft Brewer's Guild. "[Craft beer] goes against that fast food mentality and the mass produced garbage. It's about...being fresh and handmade."

Now in its fourth year, the tasting event serves as the main fundraiser for Seven Generations Ahead, an Oak Park-based nonprofit focused on sustainability. To that end, the grounds will be chock-full of clever environmentally friendly solutions, like bins for composting and buckets for liquid waste. Food vendors will be supplied with compostable plates and utensils.

"We always approach this where we make sure vendors aren't using anything that will go to a landfill," Seven Generations Ahead executive director Gary Cuneen said, adding that the system isn't "100 percent but it's very close."

In addition to the selections from dozens of breweries (full list of brewers below) guests can sample selections from the "Replicale" project, where 13 brewers will offer their take on a single beer style.

This year's "Replicale" style is American-Belgo Pale Ale, which Crowley said has "all the qualities of Belgian ale with Belgian yeast..with the aromas and flavor of American hops."

To help the good vibes flow as steady as the beer taps, music will be featured on two stages: DJ D Brice from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on one stage; The Greydowns, Buckman Page and the West Side Winders will all play sets on the other.

And what good are gourmet beers without gourmet food? Some of the area's tastiest restaurant's — including, Gourmet Gorilla, , , , , and — will be serving up all kinds of treats throughout the day.

Tickets are offered in a three-tier pricing system: $40 for the four-hour "Taster's Choice" ticket; $50 for the five-hour "Crafter's Choice"; $75 for the six-hour "Master's Choice" VIP ticket. The latter two options won't be available for purchase at the gate. Instead, they're available only at this ticketing site until 11 p.m. Friday.

The Microbrew & Food Review takes place Saturday on Marion Street, from Lake Street to North Boulevard in Downtown Oak Park. The event kicks off with a VIP ticketholder-only reception at 1 p.m., followed by the Crafter's Choice ticketholder reception from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The main event begins at 3 p.m.
