Tavi Gevinson Talks Feminism in PBS Documentary Series

The New York Times dubbed her the “Oracle of Girl World.” Now Tavi Gevinson is set to debut as one of PBS and AOL’s Makers. 

Oak Park’s Gevinson, 16, joins the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem and Hillary Clinton in the documentary series that premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

More than 175 women are featured—women, a trailer for the series states, who fight for something bigger than themselves.

Through her online magazine Rookie, Gevinson has given a voice to young women growing up in a post-feminist world who are confronting the fact that expectations still aren’t exactly the same for boys and girls.

Gevinson recalled in a Makers clip posted online that she was on a panel organized by the Economist when she realized that even she felt beholden to certain “girlish” behaviors. 

“I realized that I kept being like, sorry I’m bad at talking,” she said. “And then I was just, like, why did I have to keep apologizing? That’s so annoying. That’s such a thing that you’re just told to do. If you’re a girl you have to show some kind of insecurity to, like, show that you’re an OK person.”

It’s unclear on what date Gevinson’s segment will appear, but you can preview clips of her episode online.
