Dominican University Presents The Seven Last Words of Christ

Dominican University will present Franz Joseph Haydn's masterpiece work The Seven Last Words of
Christ
performed by the Vermeer Quartet, at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the Rosary Chapel, located in Lewis Hall on the main campus, 7900 W. Division, River Forest. For more than two decades, the Vermeer Quartet has made The Seven Last Words of Christ a Chicago tradition during Holy Week. The performance includes meditations, woven between the nine movements, delivered by notable speakers. Among this year's distinguished collaborators are Rabbi Michael R. Zedek, senior rabbi, Emanuel Congregation; Martin E. Marty, professor emeritus of religious history at the University of Chicago; Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ; and Donna M. Carroll, president of Dominican University.

Originally commissioned by a priest for the Good Friday service at Cádiz Cathedral in Spain, Hadyn adapted the orchestral piece in 1787 for string quartet. The piece includes seven main meditative sections called sonatas, which are framed by an introduction and conclusion titled “Earthquake,” making nine total movements.

Members of the Vermeer Quartet will offer a pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at events.dom.edu/seven-last-words-christ, or at the box office. For information and box office hours, call (708) 488-5000.
