Fall for Pits

Animal Care League Partners for Pit
Bulls

Possibly one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented
dog breeds; pit bulls actually have a traceable history of being loyal family
pets.  On Saturday, November 2 at The
Book Table, 1045 Lake Street in Oak Park, Animal Care League will partner with
Safe Humane Chicago (SHC) for an adoption and awareness event.

From 12 noon to 2PM staff and
volunteers from both organizations will be on hand for an afternoon of fun and
games that will also help people learn more about mixed breed pits and
pittie-type dogs.   In
addition, there will be information about the Court Case Dog program, SHC t-shirts
and calendars (for a donation), along with some giveaways.  By
partnering with Safe Humane Chicago, an organization based on the principle that a
humane community is safer, Animal Care League can continue its mission to
educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

Gretchen Decker, manager of canine operations at Animal
Care League, explains, "Bully breeds face unique challenges when looking
for their forever homes. There are still a lot of myths circulating about the
dogs that make people shy away from adopting these lovable lugs. In addition,
many landlords won’t rent to bully owners. The result is these dogs face a
longer stay at the shelter. This event is aimed at showing average pet
owners just how fun and friendly pit bulls can be."

Keri Burchfield, board member
of SHC, brings her passion to her own Oak Park community to partner with the
shelter for the first time.  “When I saw
the Pittie Party at Kinderhook in July, I was pleased to see them promoting a
breed that is so misunderstood.   So hopefully (this event) will change
some minds about pit bull-type dogs.”

The Animal Care League is a
non-profit corporation dedicated to providing hope and homes for companion
animals.  It is a limited admission
shelter located in Oak Park.   We help homeless cats, dogs and small
animals by providing them food, shelter, medical attention and love until we
can find them a loving home.  As a not for profit 501(c)3 organization, we
depend on the generosity of our communities to help us meet our goals of
finding new homes for as many animals as possible each year.
