Lake Theatre's August First Tuesday Film Club: "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"

Lake Theatre continues its First Tuesday Film Club with “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 12 PM and 7 PM. The French musical film is about a young girl separated from her lover by war who faces a life altering decision.

Tickets are $6 per person for matinee/seniors and $8.50 for adults in the evening. Advance tickets are available online or at the Lake Theatre box office, 1022 Lake Street in downtown Oak Park.  Film discussions follow each presentation.

The 1964 film (G/95 mins.) was nominated for several awards and was chosen as the Best Film for 1965 by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics. Geneviève, a 16-year-old girl whose mother, Madame Emery, operates an umbrella shop in Cherbourg, is in love with Guy, a 21-year-old auto mechanic who lives with his sickly Aunt Elise and young Madeleine, her companion. Guy and Geneviève want to marry, but he is about to begin two years of military service. After Guy departs for Algeria, Genevieve learns she is pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accept an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.
