City to Open West Side Farmers Markets

City of Chicago will open five West Side markets, with four slated to open in the Austin neighborhood.

Two summers after shutting down the Austin community's only Farmers Market, the city of Chicago will open four outdoor weekend markets there, Austin Talks reports.

"In addition to selling fresh fruits and vegetables, the markets will feature on-site demonstrations on how to eat right, cook healthy meals and plant herbs and gardens. Arts, music and community programming will also be offered," the Sun-Times reported.

The city, Austin Talks reported, shut down the Austin farmers market in 2010 without warning. Chicago Farmers Markets project coordinator Yescenia Mota told the publication the market, which had been located in the parking lot of the Emmet Math, Science & Technology Academy at Madison Street and Central Avenue, had trouble drawing vendors because of Oak Park's popular market.

Now, backed with corporate money from Kraft Foods and the Safeway Foundation, along with a host of local sponsors, five markets will open on the West Side, according to WBEZ. Four of the markets will be in Austin.
