Letter: Smedinghoff Family Thanks Community for Support Following Tragedy

River Forest resident Anne Smedinghoff, 25, died during a car bombing April 6 in Afghanistan. She was a U.S. diplomat and on her way to deliver books to children.

Dear Residents of River Forest,

We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone for the heartwarming displays of affection and admiration for our dear Anne. Your support for us at this most difficult time has brought us great comfort and strength.

We were deeply moved by all of the flags and white ribbons that lined every street of River Forest and parts of neighboring communities. They served as a fitting tribute to Anne's loving spirit, service to our country, and work supporting the cause of peace.

During the procession following her funeral, we were moved to tears by the many residents, police, and fire personnel who stood out in the rain holding flags and signs, saluting Anne, and saying their goodbyes. Anne’s work for peace was beautifully recognized and honored.

Our family is also heartened to see that Anne’s love of learning and sharing that gift with young children lives on in the wide support of the book donations in her memory.

The love and outpouring of support from everyone – from friends we have known for years to those we have never met - has confirmed the truly special nature of this community. We feel blessed and honored to call River Forest our home.
