Oak Park wins two over Hinsdale Central on Saturday

Oak Park River Forest High School Varsity Team wins two big games against conference rival Hinsdale Central.

The OPRF Varsity Baseball Team kept their win streak going on Saturday against conference rival Hinsdale Central.  OPRF won the first game 13-1 and the second 9-1.

In the First Game Zack Weigel pitched another gem.  Zack allowed only 4 hits in 5 innings, with 8 strikeouts.  OPRF’s bats went red hot on Saturday.  OPRF struck first in the 1st inning and never looked back.  With two outs Jack Picchiotti got the first hit of the game.  Nick Kowalczuk followed with a hit and then Matt McCormack got the first RBI of the game with the third hit of the game.  Next up was Alex Rice who hit his first career Varsity HR with two men on base bringing the lead to 4-0.  Sam Cottingham-Beard then drew a walk.  Mike Adams came up with a big base hit to drive Sam in for another run.  The inning ended with OPRF leading 5-0.  In the second HC came up and Zack struck out the first two batters before the third Flew Out.  The OPRF bats were red hot once again in the second inning.  Once again with two outs Jack Picchiotti was able to get on base with a walk.  Eight runs later the inning ended with the Huskies leading 13-0.  Zack and the defense took over from there allowing only 1 run and finishing up the game after five innings (HS rules end the game if a team is leading by 10 runs after the 5th).

In game two Joe McKune started the game and pitched four plus innings.  In game two HC got the lead first in the second; however the Huskies fought back and tied the game with a Double by Mike Adams.  They then took the lead on a Double by Collin O’Brien.  The inning ended with the Huskies up 2-1.  In the third HC did not score, while OPRF scored on a SAC fly by Kowalczuk to extend the lead to 3-1.  In the fourth inning HC started off with a walk and then two base hits.  HC had bases loaded when the next batter hit a shallow fly ball to centerfield.  Zack Wiegel made a tremendous catch and caught the HC runners off the bases.  With some quick thinking Zack threw to second and then Collin O’Brien thinking on his feet threw to third.  After some discussion by the umpires the play was called a TRIPLE PLAY; the first of the season.  In the 5th HC once again got things going with a walk and then a base hit.  Coach Ledbetter went to Henry Cappell with two men on and no outs.  Henry finished the inning with two fly outs and a strike out closing down HC once again.  Score still 3-0. In the 6th inning the game got away from HC.  With three walks in a row the bases were full for Alex Rice.  Alex hit his first HR for the OPRF Varsity in game one.  As he came up the crowds was wondering if Alex could do it again.  Not only did Alex hit his second HR of the day it was a grand slam.  Matt McCormack finished the scoring with a base hit for 2 more RBIs.  Score at the end of the 6th was 9-1.  Mike Brennan came in to close the game.
