UPDATED: Fatal Shooting in River Forest

Female victim dies, pair in custody after gunfire rings out near public park.

Update, 11:43 a.m. Citing the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, multiple media reports have identified the shooting victim as 29-year-old Chervon Alexander, of the 1300 block of Mayfield in Chicago’s Austin community.

Deputy Chief Craig Rutz refused to discuss details of how the shooting unfolded, saying the department has been ordered by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to refrain from speaking with reporters.

“…They felt the case may be getting more complicated,” Rutz said in an e-mail. “In the interest of maintaining the integrity of the case they just don’t want us to provide anything more.”

Three people are in police custody in connection with the shooting.

River Forest Deputy Chief Craig Rutz said emergency personnel were called to the Priory Park parking lot, located on the northeast corner of Division Street and Bonnie Brae Place, around 10:20 p.m.

It's unclear at this hour what led to the shooting and police couldn't say how many times the woman, believed to be in her mid 20s, was shot. Police radio traffic indicated she was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood "in critical care."

Authorities at the scene said the victim's chances of survival "didn't look good."

The lot, shared by Dominican University's Priory Campus and the River Forest Park District, lost power during Monday morning's powerful storms, resulting in nearly pitch black conditions as officers tried to recover shell casings.

About a mile away from the crime scene, police stopped a greyish sedan carrying three of suspects headed south on Harlem Avenue just north of Madison Street, Rutz said.

A .380-caliber handgun was found inside the car, Rutz said.
