Crime Briefs: Car Break-Ins, Attempted Robbery, Vehicle Theft

All five incidents took place on Nov. 27 in the 1000 block of South Humphrey.

Car Break-Ins

A 16-year-old from Cicero was charged with five counts of burglary Dec. 2 after a string of car break-ins in the 1000 block of South Humphrey Boulevard late last month, said.

After piecing together evidence and witness statements, officers took the teenager into custody in Cicero, police said. He was positively identified by two witnesses as one of two teens caught tampering with garages and trying to open car doors on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, police said.

The teen was successful in only in one incident when he took CDs, cigarettes and gum from a 2007 Mazda3 parked in the garage of one home. The teen gained access by breaking into a 2009 Chevy Aveo parked in the carport and removing the garage door opener.

He also broke into but got nothing from a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country van parked in a garage, a 2007 Ford Focus parked in a carport, and a 1996 Chevy Cavalier parked in a garage, police said.

The teen also was charged with obstructing identification after lying to officers about who he was, police said. His accomplice was never identified.

Attempted Robbery

Two 18-year-olds from Chicago were charged with attempted robbery Nov. 30 after trying to rob a 53-year-old woman, police said.

The victim told police she was walking south in the 100 block of Harvey Avenue around 9 p.m. when she saw two offenders, later identified as Jamal J. Jones and Shon Lamor Franklin, standing in the area.

She told police she continued to walk in that block and then was confronted by them about 10 feet away from her. After drawing the strings on their hoodies, one of the suspects told her to give him her wallet. She said she didn’t have one and screamed for help.

The suspects ran away but were arrested in the 0-100 block of South Boulevard, police said.

Motor Vehicle Theft

A 15-year-old from Chicago was charged with auto theft and other offenses Nov. 30 after he stole a car at a gas station, sideswiped a parked auto in the lot and drove it to Chicago, police said.

The victim told police he had left his 2002 Cadillac Escalade running with the keys in the ignition while he went to pay for gas at the BP Station, 6119 W. North Ave., when the subject entered his car and took off. As he left the lot he struck the front right side of a 2011 Nissan Maxima Traffic parked in the lot and drove off east on North Avenue.

Authorities were alerted to the incident, and Chicago officers apprehended the youth in the 5700 block of West Bloomingdale Avenue in Chicago, police said.

He also was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, not having a valid license or insurance, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to provide information to police. He was released to the custody of a parent and will be referred to juvenile court.
