Steven L. Chew, 26, of the 4800 block of west Fulton in Chicago, was charged with aggravated arson after turning himself into police, according to LaDon Reynolds at the Oak Park Police Department.
Police were called to a home in the 400 block of Taylor around 3:17 a.m. Jan. 19 to investigate a report of a domestic fight in an apartment.
The victim told police officers that Chew had come over to her home and began pounding on an apartment window. When she let him into the apartment, the two got into a verbal argument and she asked him to leave.
When Chew refused, the victim told him she was going to call police. She later told officers that he yelled at her, "I'll give you something to call the police about."
She was in the process of calling 911 when she noticed Chew pull out a lighter and set the blinds in her kitchen on fire. According to police, Chew then went into the living room and set a pair of curtains on fire.
Officers on the scene were able to evacuate the apartment and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher they had in their squad car.
Damage to the apartment was estimated at $200, Reynolds said.
