Oak Park Police Blotter: Adult Prevents Youngster from Robbery

The following information was supplied by the Oak Park Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Theft from Auto: The catalytic converter was taken Dec. 6 from a 2003 Honda Element parked in the 6900 block of West North Avenue. Estimated loss was $750.

Attempted Robbery: An adult male kept an 11-year-old girl from becoming the victim of a robbery Dec. 6 when he intervened on her behalf and told her to run home. A young man, believed to be a teenager, approached her from behind while she was walking in the 300 block of South Austin Boulevard around 4 p.m. and told her to give him her purse or she’d be shot. The adult helped the girl out at that point, police said. The offender was last seen running across the Jackson and Austin boulevards intersection.

Burglary: Two bags containing $1,500 were stolen sometime between Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 from inside a locked file cabinet at Midas Muffler Shop, 6200 North Ave. The key for the cabinet also was missing.

Auto Theft: A 1997 Honda Accord parked in the 400 block of South Lombard was stolen Dec. 5. Estimated loss was $1,000.

Outside Warrant Arrest: Ciara V. Wash, 19, of Sauk Village was arrested Dec. 2 on an outstanding warrant out of Calumet City for retail theft, police said. She was picked up in the 1000 block of South Humphrey Avenue.

Criminal Damage: A 2010 Ford Taurus and a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta parked in the 500 block of North Kenilworth Avenue were keyed sometime between Nov. 26 and Nov. 29. The Ford’s hood was scratched and the VW was scratched from the front panel to the gas tank cover. Estimated damage to the Ford was $500; estimated damage to the VW was $1,279.

Criminal Damage: The interior of an unlocked 1994 Ford Explorer parked in the 1100 block of South Harvey Avenue was ransacked sometime between Nov. 29 and Nov. 30; there was no loss at this time.

Battery Arrest: A 17-year-old from Oak Park who told an 18-year-old acquaintance to stay away from his girlfriend was charged with battery Dec. 2 for punching him in the face, splitting his lower lip. The offender was apprehended in the 400 block of Lake Street, about two blocks east of where the incident took place.

Residential Burglary: Jewelry, two game systems, games, laptops and an iPod were taken Dec. 2 from a home in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue. Entry was gained by forcing open the rear basement door. Estimated loss was $5,350.

Theft: A bicycle and attached lock were stolen sometime between Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 from the garage of a home in the 100 block of South Ridgeland. Estimated loss was $840.

Theft from Person: A purse containing a designer wallet, $900, papers and miscellaneous credit cards was stolen Dec. 3 from a victim in the 700 block of North Austin Boulevard. The victim told police she was taking out the garbage when a male approached and started talking with her, then grabbed the purse and entered a four-door car, which took off in an unknown direction on Superior Street. Estimated loss was $1,020.

Theft: A book bag containing cell phones and a wallet was taken Dec. 3 from the rider on a westbound CTA Blue Line train when an offender in a black hooded sweatshirt walked past the victim, grabbed the item, got off the train at Austin Boulevard and fled westbound toward the Lombard Street exit. Estimated loss was $311.64.

Theft: A bicycle was stolen Dec. 3 from the garage of a home in the 800 block of Home Avenue. Entry was gained through the open overhead door. Estimated loss was $100.

Burglary to Auto: A GPS unit and 20 audio CDs were stolen sometime between Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 from a 2001 Honda Accord parked in the 1100 block of South Humphrey Avenue. Entry was gained by breaking the rear passenger side opera window and unlocking the door. Estimated loss was $500.

Theft: Two women’s bicycles were stolen Dec. 3 from the locked common storage area of a building in the 500 block of South Scoville Avenue. Estimated loss was $700.

Retail Theft: Willie Earl Jones Jr., 43, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft Dec. 3 for taking five packs of cigarettes, valued at $50, from , police said. Jones had passed the last cashier without paying but a security guard stopped him and held him for police.

Criminal Defacement: A 15-year-old from Chicago was charged Dec. 3 with criminal defacement of property after he wrote a poem in a blue Sharpie on a village light pole on the southeast corner of Madison Street and Taylor Avenue, police said. He was turned over to the custody of a parent.

Theft from Auto: The spare tire was taken Dec. 3 from underneath a 2009 Nissan Xterra parked in a lot in the 400 block of South Grove Avenue. Two suspects were seen placing the tire inside an SUV and then took off northbound on Grove. Estimated loss was $300.

Theft from Auto: The front driver and passenger door handles were taken Dec. 4 from a 2007 Pontiac G6 parked in the 500 block of Washington Boulevard. Estimated loss was $50.

Burglary from Auto: An iPhone and wallet were stolen Dec. 4 from a 1997 Jeep Wrangler parked in the 500 block of Lake Street. Entry was gained after the suspect took the car owner’s gym bag, containing the keys to the Jeep and gym shoes, left unattended at the northeast corner of the field across the street from . Estimated loss was $386.
