Oak Park Police Blotter: Car Bashed, Scooter Stolen

Computers stolen from Beye School, convicted felon back in jail.

The following items are taken from the daily summary reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Theft: A 2-foot copper flower pot was stolen from the front yard of a home in the 700 block of Highland Avenue sometime between Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. Estimated loss was $100.

Burglary: Two bicycles and an mp3 player/FM transmitter were stolen from the garage of a home in the 300 block of Linden Avenue sometime between Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The transmitter was in a 2004 Volvo XC70, which was ransacked during the incident. Estimated loss was $2,020.

Theft: Seven Apple laptop computers from the library were stolen sometime between July 7 and Sept. 13 from , 231 N. Cuyler Ave. The estimated loss was $6,300. 

Aggravated Assault: Anthony I. Thapedi, 38, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct and aggravated assault Sept. 16 after causing a disturbance at a home in the 700 block of North Humphrey Avenue, police said.

Criminal Damage: The driver’s side door was dented and the outer panel of the passenger’s side door was partially detached on a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta parked in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue on Sept. 13. Estimated damage was $400.

Theft: A UPS package containing a child’s bicycle helmet was stolen Sept. 16 from the front porch of a home in the 900 block of South East Avenue. Estimated loss was $30.

Warrant Arrest: A Chicago man who had just been released from prison for retail theft was back in custody Sept. 16 when Oak Park police arrested Kenneth Watkins, 33, on a 2009 outstanding warrant for battery, authorities said. Officers drove to Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, south of Springfield, and picked up Watkins, after the facility informed police of his pending release.

Theft: Two lawn mowers, a patio table and a grill were taken sometime between Sept.15 and Sept.16 from the rear yard of a home in the 1100 block of South Cuyler Avenue. Estimated loss was $325.

Criminal Damage: A rock was thrown Sept. 17 at the driver’s side window of a 2008 Honda Accord parked in the 100 block of Thomas Avenue. Estimated damage was $125.

Theft: A 21-speed bicycle was stolen Sept. 17 from the garage of a home in the 800 block of Wesley Avenue. Entry was gained through an open overhead door. Estimated loss was $900.

Theft: An unsecured scooter was taken Sept. 17 from the rear of a home in the 800 block of Wenonah Avenue. Estimated loss was $101.

Criminal Damage: The rear windshield was broken and the trunk was dented on a 2001 Ford Taurus parked in the 6500 block of North Avenue. The damage was caused with a metal pipe, police said. Estimated damage was $1,500.

DUI Charge: Salvador Suarez, 21, of Bensenville, was charged Sept. 18 with drunken driving after fleeing the scene of an accident he caused at Madison Street and Maple Avenue, police said. He was apprehended in the 400 block of Maple Street.
