Oak Park Police Blotter: Student Admits to iPod Theft

Cellphone, iPod taken during robbery, money stolen from underneath a mattress.

The following items are taken from daily summary reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. The arrested person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Theft: Landscape lights were taken sometime between Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 from outside a garage in the 500 block of Scoville Avenue. Estimated loss was $60.

Residential Burglary: Approximately $60 was stolen sometime between Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 from a dresser drawer in the living room of an apartment in the 900 block of North Boulevard. Entry to the apartment was gained by using a pry tool on the front door.

Theft Arrest: Alonzo Shields, 57 of Aurora, and Tyrone Young, 55, of Chicago, were charged Oct. 18 with theft after they were caught stealing aluminum siding from a home in the 100 block of North Harvey Avenue, police said.

Burglary: A wallet containing ID and credit cards was stolen sometime between Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 from an unlocked 2005 Subaru Forester parked in the garage of a home in the 1100 block of Wesley Avenue. Entry was gained through an open overhead door. Estimated loss was $10.

Theft Arrest: A 15-year-old from Oak Park was charged Oct. 17 with theft after admitting to stealing an iPod from the book bag of another student during class at earlier in the school year, police said. According to police, the student came home with the property that a parent knew wasn’t his. The parent contacted the school, which located the owner, who decided to file charges. The 15-year-old was taken into custody by the school resource officer, police said.

Robbery: A 16-year-old Oak Park resident sustained a bruise to his hand during a robbery Oct. 17 in which both his iPod and cell phone were taken. The victim told police he was in the 100 block of North Scoville Avenue around 4 p.m. when one male struck him from behind with a fist, knocking the cell phone out of the victim’s hand. The same young man knocked the victim to the ground after he attempted to retrieve the phone, causing an iPod to fall out of his pocket. An accomplice picked up the iPod while the first one grabbed the phone and both ran off east on Lake Street.

Residential Burglary: Approximately $225 was stolen Oct. 17 from underneath the mattress in an apartment in the 900 block of North Boulevard. Entry was gained by forcing open the front door, breaking the frame.

Warrant Arrest: Christopher R. Swordy, 21, of Oak Park, was arrested Oct. 18 on an active warrant out of Bridgeview for skipping bail on a charge of possession of alcohol by a minor, police said. He was picked up in the 1000 block of North Taylor Avenue.

Warrant Arrest: Johnny B. Carter, 55, of Tennessee, was arrested Oct. 18 in McLean County on an outstanding Oak Park warrant for skipping bond on a charge on deceptive practices, police said.
