Oak Park Police Blotter: Thief Caught with Dinner Fixings

The following information was supplied by the Oak Park Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Traffic Arrest: Stephen Sweeten, 21, of Tinley Park, was charged March 15 with leaving the scene of an accident after his 1998 Dodge Durango rear-ended a 2007 Ford E250 at Harlem Avenue and Augusta Street and fled the area, police said. He was stopped in the 800 block of North Ridgeland and taken into custody. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with vehicle damage, failing to give information and render aid, failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving without insurance, police said.

Retail Theft: Kevin Petty, 51, of Oak Park, was charged March 15 retail theft for attempting to steal bologna, kielbasa sausage and fish fry seasoning bags from North Avenue Fresh Market, 6209 W. North Ave.,police said. The items were valued at $57.

Aggravated Battery: A 16-year-old Oak Park-River Forest High School student was charged March 15 with aggravated battery after striking a dean, who was in the process of conducting an internal theft investigation, police said. He was released to the custody of his parents.

Theft: A digital camera and charger were stolen sometime between March 5 and March 6 from the front desk lobby at Carlson Animal Hospital, 414 W. Lake St. Estimated loss was $200.

Theft Arrest: Luis Santiago, 41, of Chicago, was charged March 15 with theft after he was caught with a 28-inch bicycle stolen from a rack in the 400 block of Lake Street, police said.

Theft Arrest: Jeffrey Haley, 21, of Villa Park, was charged with theft March 15 after an investigation found that he was in possession of a bicycle stolen earlier this year from a home in the 1100 block of Clinton Avenue and that he pawned a projector stolen late last year from a home in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue, police said.

Warrant Arrest: Channel Smith, 30, of Chicago, turned herself in to Oak Park police March 14 and was arrested on an outstanding warrant for battery, police said.

Possession: Anthony Guptaitis, 28, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with possession of a controlled substance March 14 after a traffic stop in the 200 block of Lake Street, police said. He also was charged with possessing an item used to inject heroin and disobeying a traffic control device, police said.

Criminal Damage: A 4-by-6-foot window pane of an apartment in the 200 block of South Oak Park Avenue was broken March 14. Estimated loss was $1,000.

Burglary: A men’s bike with a basket and cable lock was stolen March 14 from the garage of a home in the 800 block of South Harvey Avenue. Entry was gained through an unlocked side service door. Estimated loss was $800.

Theft: A 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan mini-van was stolen March 14 from the 500 block of North Cuyler Avenue. Estimated loss is $5,000.

Domestic Battery: Jendrick Woods, 21, of Chicago, was charged March 15 with domestic battery, police said. He was apprehended in the 6300 block of West Roosevelt Road.

Violation Order of Protection: Michael Jackson, 41, of Glendale Heights, was charged March 14 with a violation of an order of protection in an ongoing dispute with his ex-girlfriend, police said. He was apprehended in the 500 block of South Cuyler Avenue.

Retail Theft: John A. Kouzios, 33, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft March 12 for stealing a hair dryer, a hair styler and two curl kits from CVS Pharmacy, 6748 W. Roosevelt Rd., earlier this month, police said. The items were valued at $314.

Theft from Auto: A spare tire was stolen March 12 from underneath a 2010 Chevrolet Express van parked in a lot in the 500 block of Garfield Avenue. Estimated loss was $500.

Burglary to Garage: A snow blower and cable lock were stolen March 12 from the garage of a home in the 1200 block of Columbian Avenue. Entry was gained through an unlocked side service door; once inside a ¼-inch window bar was cut. Estimated loss was $820.

Retail Theft: Sonya Hughes, 40, of Chicago, and Ricardo Bulliox, 50, of Maywood, were charged March 12 with attempting to take skin products valued at $56 from Walgreens, police said.

Criminal Damage: The front driver’s side window of a 2003 Ford Windstar parked in the 100 block of North Austin Boulevard was broken with a rock sometime between March 11 and March 12. Estimated damage was $150.

Burglary: A 10-speed bicycle was stolen sometime between March 15 and March 16 from the garage of a home in the 100 block of South Taylor Avenue. Entry was gained by forcing open the side service door. Estimated loss was $75.

Criminal Trespass: A 17-year-old from Oak Park was charged with criminal trespass to residence March 16 after he was linked to a hat found inside a home in the 300 block of South Boulevard that he entered without permission earlier in the month, police said. He was apprehended near the entrance of Oak Park-River Forest High School, police said.

Retail Theft: Marta E. Garcia, 52, of Cicero, was charged with retail theft after she tried taking three steaks, two bottles of A-1 Steak Sauce and 100 wooden skewers from Fair Share Foods, police said.

Theft from Auto: The rear license plate sticker was stolen sometime between March 16 and March 17 from a 2007 Kia Spectra parked in the 300 block of South Maple Avenue. The loss is estimated at $20.

DUI Charge: Luis Leal, 34, of Chicago, was charged with drunken driving under the March 18 after he was pulled over for speeding in the 5800 block of W. North Avenue, police said.

Theft: A cordless drill and a plastic box containing miscellaneous tools were stolen March 18 from Oak Park Temple, 1235 N. Harlem Avenue. Entry was gained through an unlocked front door; the items were located in the boiler room. Estimated loss was $490.

DUI Charge: John T. Westberg, 21, of Chicago, was charged with DUI March 18 after he was stopped for speeding in the 1500 block of North Harlem Avenue, police said. He also was charged with driving without insurance.
