One of the teens grabbed the man by the neck and threw him to the ground, according to a police report. The victim, a 58-year-old resident of the 800 block of North Humphrey Avenue, started fighting back.

That was when four other teens started punching and kicking the man in the upper body, head and face. The teens rifled through the man's pockets, making off with a cell phone valued at $80.

The victim was recently released from Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, police said.

On Friday, police officials shot down speculation that the attack was some sort of gang initiaition.

"I don't believe it's gang related," said Deputy Chief Anthony Ambrose of the Oak Park Police Department. "We're just looking at it like it's a robbery."

One of the attackers was described as a black male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 195 pounds, with a chubby build and short black hair. Another attacker was also described as a black male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build and black hair.

All five attackers are believed to be about 16 to 18 years old.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the department at 708-386-3800
