Severely beaten patient in Alzheimer/dementia ward at Oak Park Health Care dies from head injuries.

Police in Oak Park are investigating the death of 80-year-old Anibal Calderon, found unconscious Sunday after an altercation at a nursing home.

A nurse at Oak Park Health Care, 625 N. Harlem Ave., found Calderon, a patient of the facility's Alzheimer/dementia ward, unconscious sometime around 8:40 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

He'd been in an altercation with a fellow patient at the facility, authorities said. An unidentified 66-year-old man, a patient of the same ward, is "believed to be connected to the incident," police said in a news release.

Calderon was taken to Rush Hospital in Chicago, where he later died.

Police said the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide caused by "caused by cerebral cranial hemorrhaging due to blunt force trauma."

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
