Two $1K Bikes Stolen, Pot in Fake Coke Can: River Forest Police Blotter

FRIDAY, SEP. 7

Laptop Taken from Locker

A Concordia University student reported at 3:42 p.m. that someone entered her locked locker at the Koenecke Community Center (7400 Augusta) and took a 15-inch HP laptop and the associated charger. Police said that a Lojack device in the computer had been activated that will allow it to be traced.

'Suspicious' Man Charged with Burglary

Kelvin D. Smith, 20, of 3231 W. 83rd St., Chicago, was arrested at 2:03 p.m. on the 7300 block of Lake and charged with felony burglary. Police said that Smith was located after a search for a "suspicious man" looking around an alley riding a purple Magna Glacier Point bike with a flat rear tire. The bike had been previously taken from a residential garage on the 500 block of Bonnie Brae, police said.

Hit and Run 

Michael A. Sebastian, 20, of 8804 Park Ln., St. John, IN, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to provide information after striking property, operating a vehicle without valid insurance or registration, and injuring Village property after an accident at 10:12 a.m. at the corner of Division and Thatcher. Police said that witnesses described the accident as a blue pickup striking a light pole and leaving the scene. The truck and driver were later located on the 7600 block of Madison, police said.

Camera and Tripod Disappear from Dominican

A Dominican University faculty member reported at 9:07 a.m. that sometime between August 22 and September 6, a Canon D5100 digital camera, a tripod and a power cord were taken from an unlocked cabinet in a shared office on the 7900 block of Division. Police said the office door is typically kept locked. The value of the items was estimated at more than $1400.

Car Burglar Takes $5 and an Umbrella

A resident of the 100 block of Thatcher reported that someone entered her unlocked car betwen 4:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:00 a.m. Friday and removed $5 in coins and an umbrella.

Pot Hidden in Fake Coke Can?

Caleb T. Diebert, 21, of 3522 W. Vernon Ave., Brookfield, was charged with possssion of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration after being stopped on the 900 block of Harlem for expired plates at 2:41 a.m. Police said that a search of the car turned up 2.3 grams of marijuana hidden in a "faux Coca-Cola can," as well as a glass pipe with marijuana residue.

THURSDAY, SEP. 6

iPhone Vanishes During Meeting with Prof

A Dominican University student reported that her iPhone 4 disappeared from a desk in Room No. 16 in Parmer Hall while she was meeting with her professor. The iPhone was in a white and purple case and valued at $200.

Guests Took Resident's Jewelry?

At 10:08 a.m., a resident reported at the police station that he believed someone removed several pieces of jewelry (including a watch and two necklaces) worth more than $1,000 from his home betwen Mar. 3 and Mar. 23. There were no signs of forced entry, although the resident had guests in the home during that time.

WEDNESDAY, SEP. 5

Man Trying to Get Norco from CVS

A pharmacist at CVS (7929 North) reported to police at 11:36 a.m. that a man made repeated attempts to call in a prescription for Norco 10/325, a narcotic. Police said that this caller has been using various names at several Chicagoland locations to attempt to acquire the narcotic.

TUESDAY, SEP. 4

Unlocked $1,000 Bike Taken

At 8:38 p.m., a resident reported to police that someone had removed a boy's red Trek bicycle, valued at $1,000, from the front of the Whole Foods Market at 7245 Lake. The bike had been left unlocked and unattended.

Credit Card Theft and Fraud

Police said that a customer at Panera Bread, 7349 Lake, reported at 7:54 p.m. the theft of a cloth wallet from her purse while she was picking up her order. The wallet contained $80, a driver's license and credit cards. One of the cards was then used to charge $866 worth of merchandise at a Meijer retail outlet before the victim could cancel it, police said.

Officers Respond to Keystone Fire

Officers from the River Forest Police Department responded with the River Forest Fire Department to a structure fire in a detatched garage at the Keystone at 6:10 p.m. The fire was quickly extinguished and arson is not suspected.

Another $1,000 Bike Theft

At 5:49 p.m. a resident of the 100 block of Forest reported that someone entered his open garage sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and stole a pink and white 24-inch girls' Mongoose bicycle. The bike's value was estimated at $1,000.

Burglary of Car and Home

A resident of the 100 block of Franklin reported that between 9 p.m. on Monday and 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, someone entered an unlocked and unattended car at the rear of his home and removed the ignition, which was left on the car's floor. The resident also reported that the offender appeared to have used the car's garage-door opener to open the garage and steal a white Schwinn girl's bike valued at $180.
