Three Convicted of 2010 Convenience Store Robbery

Off-duty cops spot armed robbery of River Forest 7-Eleven.

Three Chicago were found guilty of the 2010 stick-up of a River Forest convenience store that led to a high-speed chase through several communities before ending outside a Berwyn shopping plaza. 

Eddie Arroyo, 28, and Timothy Weatherby, 26 were each convicted on charges of Class X armed robbery. Andrew Urbaniak, 24 the driver of the getaway car, also was found guilty of charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, both felonies.

The convictions came on Sept. 23 after a bench trial before Judge Noreen Love at the Fourth District Courthouse in Maywood. Here's how police say the crime took place:

Around 10:40 p.m. on Jan. 28, Arroyo and Weatherby, entered the  at 1140 Harlem Ave. in River Forest, where Weatherby pulled out a handgun and both men then demanded money from the store clerk.

A retired Oak Park Police officer driving by the store noticed the crime in progress and called 911, police said. Another off duty Oak Park officer also saw the incident, then followed Arroyo and Weatherby into the alley behind the store, where Urbaniak was waiting behind the wheel of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Tailed by police cruisers from River Forest, Oak Park and Forest Park, the SUV sped south on Harlem, eventually running out of room near Cermak Plaza, where they ran into a police roadblock.

Inside the getaway car, investigators found a bag stuffed with about $450. They also found found the weapon — a BB gun shaped like a semi-automatic pistol. 

Each of the man faces between 6 and 30 years in prison, authorities said.
