Trader Joe's Hopes to Sell Liquor at Oak Park Store

Oak Park's Trader Joe's is one of only two stores in Illinois that has yet to sell hard alcohol. A new village ordinance will help them secure a license for the new booze.

Oak Park Village Board members Monday approved an ordinance that will make it easier for Trader Joe's to get approved for a new liquor license to sell spirits.

The ordinance will reduce the minimum square footage requirement for businesses seeking a license to sell liquor from 10,000 to 8,000. Village Manager Cara Pavilcek said the license request from Trader Joe's prompted staff's recommendation for the change to accommodate the business, which occupies an 8,330-square-foot space.

Trader Joe's is one of only two stores in Illinois that does not sell hard alcohol, said Village Trustee and Liquor Commissioner Adam Salzman.

Trader Joe's has yet to finalize its application for the new license, according to a village staff memo.

Trader Joe's is located at 483 N. Harlem Ave. in Oak Park.
