Two Charged with May 11 Armed Robbery

Car hijacking in Westmont, traffic stop in Bellwood lead to solving the case.

An 18-year-old from Bellwood and a 16-year-old from Glendale Heights were charged June 13 in connection with the armed robbery of an Oak Parker, said.

According to police, the 51-year-old victim was walking in the 800 block of Home Avenue around 8:30 p.m. May 11 when two young men approached him. The 16-year-old displayed a handgun while the 18-year-old, identified as Thomas Johnson, grabbed the man's briefcase containing a cell phone, wallet, glasses and other items.

The two then jumped into a waiting car, occupied by a third person, and drove away. The victim, who was uninjured, called police.

This week, police in Bellwood spotted a car matching the description of a 2003 Toyota Avalon stolen during a carjacking in Westmont and found that it was the getaway car used in the Oak Park incident, Oak Park Police Cmdr. LaDon Reynolds said.

Bellwood police stopped the car and took the three passengers into custody.

Johnson and the juvenile were booked at Maybrook court, Reynolds said. Police did not have enough evidence to charge the third man in connection with the armed robbery, Reynolds said.
