As Election Nears, Some Dates to Keep in Mind

Need to register, want to vote absentee or early? Here are some deadlines.

Are you new to the area and need to register to vote? Are you going to be out of town on Nov. 6, Election Day?

Here are a few dates to keep in mind as you prepare to do your civic duty.

Register to Vote

Registration closes Tuesday, Oct. 9. And there are a load of different ways to sign up. You can sign up online. Or you can send in your application. Ballot applications are due Nov. 1.

The League of Women Voters of Oak Park and River Forest will be signing up new voters and those who have changed their address in recent months. Registration will be at the Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest Public Libraries during the following hours:

  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22.
  • 1:30 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23.

Registration also will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the River Forest and Forest Park public libraries and from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Oak Park Public Library.

Forest Park's public library is at 7555 Jackson Blvd., Oak Park is at 834 Lake St. and River Forest is at 735 Lathrop Ave.

You also can register at your village hall. To find out the hours, call Oak Park at 708-383-6400; River Forest, 366-8500 or Forest Park, 366-2323. And Illinois drivers' license facilities will sign up voters as well.

You must bring two pieces of identification to register in person. Neither needs to be a photo ID, but one must include your current address.

Grace Period

Grace-period registration and voting is the only way to register or change your address or name after the regular registration period ends. It is also the only way to vote if you are not registered or if your voter registration is not up to date.

For the November 6 election, grace period registration and voting will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday 8:30 a.m to 7 p.m., Oct. 10 to Nov. 3, at 1311 Maybrook Square, Room 104. Call 708-865-6010 for more information.

Vote Early 

You can cast your ballot before the election from Monday, Oct. 22 to Saturday Nov. 3. 

Early voters may vote at any Cook County early voting site. The closest ones include:

  • From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday at Elmwood Park Village Hall, 11 W. Conti Parkway and Oak Park Village Hall, 123 Madison St.
  • From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 1311 Maybrook Square, Room 104.

In-person absentee voting begins Nov. 4 at the Cook County Clerk's downtown office, 118 N. Clark St. On Nov. 5, in-person absentee voting will take place at 1131 Maybrook Square.
