Oak Park Police Prepare for Concealed Carry Changes

Police train on how to enforce concealed carry legislation, plan to reach out to businesses to help them understand how to handle potentially difficult situations.

With concealed carry legislation in effect as of Jan. 1, Oak Park police are learning how to enforce a new law that could potentially affect officers' safety.

The new "shall-issue" law approved in May mandates that concealed carry permits be issued to Firearm Owners Identification Card-holders who have completed 16 hours of training.

The first licenses are expected to be issued in April, according to the Village of Oak Park.

The law maintains the ban on firearms in many places, including government buildings, schools, stadiums and bars.

Police are also planning to reach out to local business operators and others who may need to know how to handle situations involving someone suspected of carrying a concealed firearm in a prohibited location, according to the village. Business owners can also request state-approved door decals that let customers know where firearms are prohibited.

Homeowners can also prohibit people from entering their property with a concealed firearm, and any business owner who posts a sign approved by the State Police may prohibit concealed firearms on his or her premises, according to the village.
