Gymnastics Center Vaults Ahead on Aldi Site

Store giving way to Park District of Oak Park's gymnastics center.

If you haven't been by the far east end of Oak Park lately, you haven't noticed that a long-time staple is coming down at Lake Street and Humphrey Avenue.

The is clearing the site of the long-vacant - and now almost completely razed - Aldi site at 25 Lake St. to become the new home of the Gymnastics Center.

The overcrowding at the administrative center at 218 Madison St., - housing the popular programs, park district buildings and grounds operations and the administrative offices - prompted the park district to the long-vacant Aldi property last summer.

Extensive research and public input led commissioners to build a new gymnastics facility at Lake and Humphrey and expand buildings and grounds operations at its current home.

Construction of the new gymnastics facility is expected to start this fall. When completed in the fall of 2013 the center will become the park district's 26th facility.

Actually where Aldi is, really isn't the far southeast part of Oak Park. It's far east, but it's neither north, nor south, Lake street is pretty much the north/south divider of Oak Park.
