Recycle that Stuff Saturday - and Pick Up an Unwanted Bike

Electronics, prescription drugs can be dropped off in Oak Park and Forest Park, Oak Park police to sell unclaimed bicycles.

Got an old laptop or a DVD player that you want to get rid of or a bottle of prescription medication that you don't want to toss out.

Recycle it - both options will be open in Oak Park on Saturday. But fine print here - you'll have to take those items to two different spots.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. drop off your electronics at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. Items that will be taken include: computers, monitors, television sets, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, printers, fax machines, MP3 players, portable digital assistants, video game consoles, videocassette recorders/players, digital video disk players, zip drives, scanners and microwaves.

Remember, waste haulers, by state law, can no longer take electronics.

Call 708-358-5700 or e-mail publicworks@oak-park.us for more information.

Then head to the police department to dispose of unwanted or expired medication in the lobby of the Oak Park Police Department, 123 Madison St. This is part of the annual Take Back National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Anyone who misses the Take Back event can bring unwanted medication to the Police Department anytime for safe disposal. For more information on local medication disposal, call 708-386-3800.

Drugs can be dropped off in Forest Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police department, 517 Des Plaines Ave. For more information call Forest Park police at 708-366-2425. No questions asked.

Dropping them off will prevent pill abuse and theft. And flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the rash pose safety and health hazards and can poison the water supply.

Back in Oak Park, just down the street from the Oak Park police department, check out more than 80 bikes that were stolen but unclaimed by their owners. From 9 a.m. to noon, bikes will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis at 260 Madison St.

Bikes range in size, style and condition, are pre-priced and will be sold as-is with no pre-sale inspection. Payment may be made with cash or check. Prices will range from $30 to more than $100.

Only one bike may be purchased per person at a time, with a limit of two bikes per household. All sales are final. For more information, call 708-386-3800 or e-mail police@oak-park.us for more information.
