The Week Ahead in Oak Park and Forest Park

Want to get involved, catch up with pals or learn, Patch has a few suggestions in and around Forest Park this week.

Harken Seniors

Arts and crafts, card and board games and camaraderie will be on deck when the Forest Park Senior Citizens Club gathers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd., Forest Park. Need to get there? Call the center, 708-771-7737. Seniors from other communities are welcome.

If you would like to get a refresher behind the wheel course instead, AARP will be sponsoring a two-day, eight-hour driving class at the medical office building of Rush Oak Park Hospital. The course is designed specifically to meet the needs of older drivers.

The course will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 and on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in Room 2000 at 610 S. Maple Ave. in Oak Park.

Registration is required; you must attend both classes. The cost is $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members. To sign up, call 708-660-4636.

Take a Bite Out of Crime

The Forest Park Neighborhood Watch team will get the latest from the police during its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 at village hall, 517 Des Plaines Avenue. New members are encouraged. Contact Sgt. Steve Zanoni or Off. Tom Cannon at 708-366-2425 for more information.

Get Informed

The major issues of the 2012 election will be the focus of a panel discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St. The participants will include Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn and Charlie Meyerson, radio and Internet journalist. The moderator will be Dan Haley of the Wednesday Journal. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Park and River Forest.

Do Your Civic Duty

Speaking of the League, members will be at the Forest Park Public Library Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday Sept. 23 to register new voters and re-register ones who have moved. The hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Make sure you bring two pieces of ID with your current address.

The library is located at 7555 Jackson Blvd.

Voter registration also will be taking place at the Oak Park and River Forest public libraries. Go to the League's website and click on Calendar of Events for more information.
