"Tis the Season to Recycle"

Oak Park to recycle greenery and lights; River Forest only does greenery.

The new song for the season in Oak Park and River Forest should begin “Tis the season to recycle.”

During the weeks of Jan. 9 and Jan. 16 holiday trees in Oak Park will be picked up on regular trash and recycling collection days.

Here are the rules:

• Place trees in the regular collection area next to the refuse cart — only residents with no alley should put trees at the curb.

• Remove all tinsel, decorations and stands.

• Do not put tree in plastic disposal bag.

• Place wreaths and garlands in the refuse cart — they are held together with wire and not recyclable.

In Oak Park, holiday lights can be dropped off from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in a box located at the ground floor main entrance of the , 201 South Blvd. Mini-lights, C7 lights, C9 lights, rope and LED lights, as well as extension cords, will be accepted throughout the month of January.

In River Forest, natural Christmas greenery (trees, garland, and wreaths), that do not contain metal or synthetic framing parts, lights or ornaments, will be collected on the following Tuesdays:

  • January 3
  • January 10
  • January 17
  • January 24
  • January 31

Trees, wreathes, etc. that contain metal or synthetic framing parts, lights or ornaments will be collected as refuse by waste trucks as part of the regular collection process over the same time period.

River Forest doesn't have a lights recycling program.
