Charges Brought Against Maywood Man in Attempted Child Abductions

Police have filed charges against Shawn Stubblefield, 48, of Maywood, who police said has a lengthy record.

Oak Park police have filed charges against the man they allege is responsible for two recent child abductions attempts in Oak Park.

Shawn Stubblefield, 28, of the 1800 block of South 4th Ave. in Maywood, has been charged with one count of kidnapping and one could of child abduction for recent incidents in Oak Park.

Stubblefield was also charged with two counts of kidnapping, one count of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault for an incident police said occurred in the 400 block of North Parkside Avenue in Chicago on Monday morning.

According to police, Stubblefield will appear in bond court tomorrow in the Cook County Criminal Courts Building, 26th St. at California Avenue.

Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley praised motorists who stopped to help two victims involved in the attempted abductions and for getting good descriptions of the man and his vehicle for police to use in his quick arrest.

“The willingness of these two motorists to get involved when they saw a crime being committed is to be commended,” Tanksley said. “In addition, the excellent work performed by all the police agencies involved further underscores the importance of the unified spirit of cooperation that we have in the Chicago metro area.'

'The details of the descriptions of the suspect were key to our ability to get the word out quickly and find the suspect before he could get very far. These were brave young girls who met adversity with strength and poise. Their actions helped to take a dangerous predator off the streets.”

The first incident in Oak Park occurred on Wednesday morning in the 100 block of south Taylor Avenue around 8:15 a.m. when a 16-year-old Oak Park and River Forest High School student was approached by a man, who put his arms around her and started pulling her. The victim screamed, bit his finger and pulled away. A passing motorist stopped and the man released the girl and walked away.

Less than an hour later in the 700 block of Home Avenue, a 13-year-old student was walking to Brooks Middle School, 325 S. Kenilworth Ave., when a man came up behind her and put his hand over her mouth. The victim screamed and ran towards a passing motorist as the suspect fled.

An off-duty Maywood police officer stopped Stubblefield on Madison Avenue in River Forest when his car was seen driving erratically. Stubblefield was held yesterday as a person of interest in the case and charges were filed this morning.

At this time, police have not released any further information regarding the charges brought against Stubblefield in the Chicago incidents.
