Dominican University GSLIS Hosts “What’s New: The Best of Children’s Literature 2012”

Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science will host renowned children’s literature expert Dr. Peggy Sharp for “What’s New: The Best of Children’s Literature 2012,” a professional development seminar for teachers, librarians, and other adults working with children who would like to shore up their youth collections and programming.


The event will be held on Thursday, November 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Dominican University’s Priory Campus, 7200 West Division Street, River Forest.


Sharp is well known for her presentations about new children's books, connecting books to all areas of the curriculum, and motivating children to read. She is an experienced teacher and library media specialist and has received national awards for her creative teaching ideas.

The program will provide a tour of the best in new children’s literature, laced with suggestions for using literature in your program. Participants will learn both about the best new titles and highly practical, ready-to-use ideas for all areas of youth programming, including many existing titles.

  • preview the best new children’s books—fiction, nonfiction, picture books

  • learn about current and future, hot topics in children’s literature

  • discuss the latest technological developments affecting children’s literature

  • learn outstanding teaching strategies for new books as well as old favorites useful for all elementary students in all curriculum areas

  • learn how to engage young readers with literature.
